Men's Hair Styling – The Complete Guide (Wax, Gel, Pomade & More)

Which product for which look – and how to apply it correctly. This guide walks you step by step from towel-dried hair to a fixed finish, with the right Kabuto textures for every hair type.

Step by step

  1. Prepare your hair — Towel-dried hair is ideal. Hair that is too wet spreads product poorly; hair that is too dry takes it up unevenly.
  2. Choose by hair type and look — Fine hair: Powder Wax for volume. Shine and everyday: Aqua Wax. Matte, natural finish: Matte Clay or Defining Paste. Classic slick-back: Water Based Pomade. Maximum hold: hairspray or gel.
  3. Dose correctly — A pea- to fingertip-sized amount. Add more rather than overloading – too much weighs hair down and kills volume.
  4. Warm in your palms — Spread the product evenly between both palms until smooth – never press it straight from the tub into your hair.
  5. Work in and shape — Work from back to front, define contours with a comb. Air-drying gives more texture, a diffuser gives cleaner lines.
  6. Lock in finish and hold — A touch of Sheen Spray for shine, or a hairspray (Extreme or Mega Hold) from 25 cm for long-lasting hold.
